Barroso Begins Forming Team

The list of candidates for the new Commission is now complete following the nomination of Neelie Kroes for the Netherlands and Connie Hedegaard for Denmark. Portfolios are to be confirmed next week and there is a strong suggestion that Joaquin Almunia of Spain will get Competition and that Neelie Kroes will be moved to trade or possibly Viviane Reding’s seat at Information Society. It is likely that France will get the internal market (minus financial services) although the FT did report on Thursday that Barroso was irked by reports from France that this was in the bag.
